Shoot the Scene sat down with Jesse Johnson, keyboardist for Motion City Soundtrack, before their show on January 26 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

STS: If you were a dinosaur, what kind of dinosaur would you be?
JJ: Pterodactyl.

STS: How did Tony’s arm drama affect the construction of the album?
JJ: We had to change the song writing process, since we all live in different cities we would e-mail each other parts and construct the drums. Tony recorded drums last, which is the exact opposite of how an album is put together. Usually drums are tracked first.

STS: How do you feel the fans have changed with you as you’ve grown as a band?
JJ: They’ve gone through high school and college. I mean, we’ve been together as a band for eight years, and that’s enough time for someone to graduate high school and college.

STS: How would you say your styles have changed and progressed since I Am The Movie?
JJ: We’ve gotten more comfortable with exploring different things. We’ve started trying out different things like piano, organ, vocal harmonies--just more instruments in general. I Am The Movie was just a pure rock album with lots of guitar.

STS: Do you feel it’s more important for performances to maintain continuity from night to night, or do you like to have some variety?
JJ: We used to play the same thing from night to night, but now we’re on our fourth record and we have a lot more material. We’re going to be playing different songs every night of this tour, but we are going to play some new songs that are going to stay on the setlist from night to night.

STS: Social networking makes it easier for you to reach the fans on a more personal level, but it also makes it easier for fans to reach you on a more personal level. Sites like Twitter make it easy for a fan to keep a constant bookmark on you. How do you feel about this rising trend?
JJ: I think it’s great. We all have twitter and facebook, and it makes it easy for fans to get in touch with us and send us messages. Twitter especially, since it’s easy to answer questions in 140 characters.

STS: The video for Disappear is a lot darker than any other video you’ve released. What was the inspiration behind it?
JJ: The song itself is a lot darker than anything we’ve ever written. A lot of our videos are tongue-in-cheek, but this time we went with something dark to fit the song.

STS: Warped Tour is still several months away, but what would you say your do’s and don’ts for Warped are?
JJ: Do bring flip flops because those are the most disgusting showers you will ever encounter, do bring baby wipes because the bathrooms run out of toilet paper fast, don’t go to a bar, get drunk, and miss bus call, and don’t lose all your money gambling.

STS: How do you maintain a good rapport with each other on and off the road? What’s your secret to happy, functioning friendships after spending so much time together on tour?
JJ: It’s easy for us because we all live in different cities, so when we’re off tour we can have our own lives.

STS: What kind of pre-show rituals do you practice?
JJ: Right before we go on we all tell each other stupid shit and joke around so we’re all in a good mood when we go on stage.

STS: Finally, what are your opinions on Juggalos (the hockey jersey-wearing, Faygo drinking super-fans of Insane Clown Posse)?
JJ: I’m jealous because I wanted our fans to be Muggalos but they beat us to it.
